Golden Retriever of the Month – “Jack Maffei”

Jack Maffei a handsome 1 year old golden retriever from San Diego, California and  is a typical California boy.  He captured my heart from his many adventures on his Facebook page.  His birthday is December 5th.  Something tells me we will be seeing more of this young man.  We have 10 years at least, hopefully Tucker and Jack will be able to run on the beach together someday…sigh…

Jack loves to swim…  Everywhere.  In the ocean:

Say what you will about Charlie Sheen, but he is a generous soul.  He recently wired 15 year old Teagan Marti $10,000 towards the purchase of a golden retriever service dog.

Teagan was injured in 2010 in an amusement park tragedy when the free falling ride went terribly wrong.  She suffered severe injuries and was hospitalized for 3 months. Teagan now walks with the help of a walker.

The golden retriever puppy will be trained to turn lights on and off, pick up objects, and be Teagen’s full time companion by trainer Jake Guell in Fond Du Lac, WI.

Teagan will receive the dog on her birthday in September, and Sheen suggested she name it Charlie.

Golden Retriever Puppy Gets Prosthetic Paw

Bristol, Virginia – Lily seems like a happy, healthy golden retriever puppy who doesn’t know she only has three paws. Due to a birth complication, Lily was born missing one of her front paws. According to her owner Heather Mullin, removing the limb would have been the easier and less expensive decision, and is more common.  Instead she chose to let Lily be, and on Wednesday she was fitted with a prosthetic paw.  Heather says it will ultimately be up to Lily whether she wears it or not.

Heather is an occupational therapist who chose this special girl as she felt she had a purpose. Lily gets to work alongside her owner each day helping to rehabilitate patients, some who have prosthetic limbs themselves.  Lily  will start her formal training at 6 months of age.

“I really wanted to get a pet that could work alongside me that could help my patients. She did seem like the perfect choice,” says Mullin.  Full story from WCYB News here.

Golden Retriever Works At Dental Office

Brooke is a four year old golden retriever with a part time job.  Her owner, Dr. Paul Weiss works at a pediatric dental office, and he brings four legged companion with him to the office two days a week.  Brooke is a trained therapy dog.

Brooke helps ease the kids fear of dental work by laying and cuddling with the child during procedures.

In one article in the  The Globe and Mail, Amberly McAteer writes  “Even for a dog-loving, dentist-fearing girl, this is going too far.”

Dogs at the office? – Fine, but this is taking it too far.

Some of the comments in the articles question if this is sanitary.  Weiss says the office is thoroughly cleaned and Brooke has baths before her shifts at the office.  Personally, I wouldn’t mind snuggling with a golden while having my teeth worked on.
