Today is World Cancer Day, so I figured it was the perfect day to feature February’s Golden Retriever of the Month, Parker, aka “Parker Pup”.

“Parker” – Facebook.com/ParkerPup

Parker is a 5 year old golden retriever from Beaverton, Oregon who says his most important job, aside from being a loyal family member, is being a therapy dog.  He likes to visit cancer patients and children learning to read.  Parker earned his CGC before the age of one.  He is also a cancer advocate by often raising funds and awareness.  Aside from his busy schedule, in his spare time he likes to hang out with his big “sister” Daisy and competes in Agility.

This video explains most of his work to date:

Parker is a model and celebrity in the dog world.  Here he is in Time’s Square:

Parker has also appeared in print and television ads and won  2 WorldWide Fido crowns.  You can read all about his life from puppyhood on his website ParkerPup.com or visit his facebook page at Facebook.com/ParkerPup and Twitter @parkerpupdotcom

If you read my blog, you have seen some of the videos I have posted of Parker and his “sister” Daisy staring in their own YouTube videos.  These are not to be missed!! Check out their YouTube channel here.

Just last month Parker starred in a live performance of “Cheaper by the Dozen” which ran for several nights at the Hart Theatre in Hillsboro and he received amazing reviews.

I managed to get in touch with Parker’s human, Jenn, who answered a few questions for me on behalf of Parker.

Question:  Where is your favorite place to sleep?

Parker:  “Recently I’ve been allowed (when I am invited) to get up into the chair to sit on my human’s lap. But if I’m not invited, I have a really comfy pillow close to the fireplace where I love to lay.”

Question:  What is your favorite toy?

Parker: “Tennis balls! Actually technically my favorite is my orange and blue Chuck-It ball. “

Question:  Do you ever steal food off of the counter?

Parker:  “Never.”

Question:  What is the last thing you destroyed?

Parker:  ” I haven’t destroyed anything for quite awhile.Unless, well.. do you count tomato plants in the backyard? If that’s the case, I LOVE to swipe tomatoes out in the back yard, LOL!! Wait.. is this ‘on the record?’

Question:  Where is your favorite spot to be petted?

Parker: “Ear scratchies and neck massages. My family does the whole TTouch thing all over about every other day and I love it” (and it’s good for checking for lumps and bumps, too).

Thanks Jenn and Parker!

Okay, now for the serious stuff.  Cancer

Parker is active in raising money for both The Morris Animal Foundation and The American Cancer Society. On April 28, 2013 he is participating in Elk Grove K9 Cancer Walk Benefiting Morris Animal Foundation.  Here is the link to his fundraising page.  Help them reach there goal, they are almost halfway there!

To help celebrate my 91st birthday on January 17, please help me raise $10,000 for Morris Animal Foundation, which will celebrate its 65th anniversary of advancing animal health this year. In honor of these two milestones, please consider giving a gift to Morris Animal Foundation today.”                                           – Betty White -

Here’s a PSA from 2011

Betty White. Just one more reason to love Golden Retrievers

Betty White is an actress and animal activist. She also happens to own a golden retriever named Pontiac.  He was rescued from Guide Dogs For the Blind in 2010.  Before that, she had a golden named Kitta, also a rescued former guide dog who had bad hips.

Betty was an only child growing up and only had pets as siblings.  She eventually came to love the golden retriever for it’s ability to read their humans feelings.  Kitta took care of Betty after her hip surgery, and she spent her 90th birthday with her favorite companion, Pontiac.

Once someone has had the good fortune to share a true love affair with a Golden Retriever, one’s life and one’s outlook is never quite the same.” –Betty White

I was born in the very early seventies, and grew up watching Betty White on Mary Tyler More, The Golden Girls, and more recently, on Hot in Cleveland and Off Their Rockers.

Betty was recently honored at The Second Annual American Humane Association’s Hero Dog Awards. Here she met Surf Dog Ricochet (another amazing Golden Retriever!) and agreed to match any donations that were raised on the sale of a custom made dog dress for dogs in need.

Here is Betty White  and Pontiac pairing with the Morris Animal Foundation to fight canine cancer.  Another great site that needs to be mentioned (and worth a whole blog post) is Land of Pure Gold.  This is a site ran by Rochelle Lasseur dedicated to cancer research in golden retrievers.  It is my favorite golden retreiver site on the web.  Click here to read a great article about Betty White from Rochelle.

Thank you Betty White, for all you do for animals!

Great News For Golden Retrievers – Morris Animal Foundation Expanding Golden Retriever Lifetime Study

The Morris Animal Foundation is looking for 3000 golden retrievers under 2 years old in and in good health and have a 3 generation pedigree to participate in a study on identifying risk factors for cancer and other diseases in the breed.  Things like environment and nutrition will be tracked for the lifetime of the dog, as well as overall health.

If you live in the United States, and you and your veterinarian are willing to commit to this for the next 10 to 14 years, the research could seriously benefit not only the breed, but the whole veterinary medicine field.

Visit the Morris Animal Foundation site for more information.

“This study requires a long-term commitment from dog owners and their veterinarians,” says study director Michael Guy, DVM, MS, Ph.D. “We have the potential to learn valuable information that will not only improve canine health but will also significantly advance the entire field of veterinary medicine.”

Golden Retriever Lifetime Study

Golden Retriever Lifetime Study

If you are from the continental United States, and you own a Golden Retriever, you may be eligible to participate in a lifetime study, dedicated specifically for the breed.  They are looking for approx 3,000 golden retrievers, and the study will last 10-20 years.  I cant wait to see what they find.  I am Canadian, so unfortunately I do not qualify for the study, but here is where you can get the information
