Let me start by saying Kona is expected to make a full recovery, thankfully. On March 20, 2012, a 4 year old golden retriever named Kona was lured away from his home by neighbor Ricky Lee Knowles, 55 of Orting Washington with a piece of bacon laced with rat poisoning. Knowles tied Kona to a pole with a wire around his neck, tried to strangle him, then beat him with a hatchet. Apparently Knowles “just snapped” because Kona was barking.
Police attended Knowles’ home after a neighbors alerted them of the horrific crime. They found Kona, tied to a pole in the garage, bleeding from his head and neck, as well as the blood and fur covered hatchet. Kona suffered multiple fractures on his head and a collapsed sinus cavity.
Kona is recovering at home with owner Sam Hokanan, who has since moved from the area. Full Story from Komo News here.
On September 17, Knowles was sentenced to 6 months in jail, and six months of home monitoring upon release. He was also ordered to pay Kona’s vet bills of approximately $5000 and is not allowed to live with animals. Knowles was previously investigated for firing a gun at at neighbor Trevor Johnson’s dog while his 6 year old son was less than 30 yards away. Something tells me this is not the last we will hear of Ricky Lee Knowles…
