K9 Comfort Dogs and their Handlers Surprised on Good Morning America

The K9 Parish Comfort Dogs from Lutheran Church Charities were featured on Good Morning America yesterday in a segment called “You’re Not Dreaming”  They choose someone or a group of people that have really resonated with them and deserve some special recognition.  ABC News and GMA anchor Lara Spencer chose the Comfort Dogs and says she hasn’t been able to stop thinking about them since she first met them in Newtown.

I’m sure you all know who they are by now.  They are a group of golden retrievers and their handlers who visited Joplin after the town was devestated by the tornado, Sandy Hook Elementary, Boston, and many other places some comfort was required.  These handlers are selfless, wonderful people willing to drop everything at a minute’s notice to help others in some of the most grim situations.

Yesterday the dogs and handlers got to walk the red carpet and were rewarded with many treats including a “doggy bag” full of jerkey, shampoo, toys etc from Sergeants Pet Care, a spay day at Canine Ranch Spa, A “Rufflaxation Massasge” courtesy of Hope Vet Clinic and a free grooming from New York Dog Spa and Hotel.

The handlers were rewarded with gift certificates from bliss Spa.

President of Lutheran Church Charities Tim Hetzner was presented with a full size van from Hertz that they have use of for a year.

It’s the weeeekend! Golden Retrievers Everywhere are Celebrating.

For many of us, this is the first nice weekend of the year.  Golden retrievers are celebrating!  These pictures are not of golden retrievers celebrating this weekend, but are to inspire you to get out with your golden and do something extra fun.  Tucker’s tail wouldn’t stop wagging tonight as he chewed on his “glowie” ball at the park.  He has had a busy day.  Tomorrow we plan to take him for his first swim of the year.

Golden Retriever Store Mascot Stolen, Returned

Tora, the golden retriever, is a regular fixture at Bruce Yang’s 102 Street Market in the Parkrose neighborhood of Portland, Oregon.  At 4:55 pm on Thursday, April 25, Tora wandered out of the store and was coaxed into a car with an unidentified couple.  There is surveillance video footage of the incident in a story from KATU News in the link below.

Mona Foster and Tora – KATU News

Yesterday, April 30, Tora was returned by an unidentified man.  Tora’s owner, Mona Foster,  is not interested in pressing charges and says in the interview “there are other companion dogs out there, other channels to go, than stealing someone’s dog, seriously”

According to an article from KOIN.com,  police used credit card info from the suspects, and think it may have been the suspect’s father who returned the dog.

Chalk it up to another happy ending!  Welcome back Tora!

Homemade Cookies for your Golden Retriever

I received my cookie cutters from cheap cookie cutters the other day and finally had time to make Tucker some treats tonight.

With all the pet food and treat scares I like to make Tucker homemade cookies. I have refined my recipe as follows

2 C flour (rice, whole wheat, all purpose whatever)
1 C oats
1/4 C honey
3/4 C hot water
1 egg
Drizzle olive or flax seed oil
Parsley

Combine ingredients and roll out and cut into shapes.

Bake at 350 F for about 10 to 15 minutes until golden on edges and cooked through, depending on thickness.

Voila!

Would You Use Medical Marijuana For Your Golden Retriever?

Medical Cannabis Growing Operation in Oakland,...

So your golden retriever has just been diagnosed with cancer and is very weak and lethargic, and in a lot of pain. If you knew there was an option to ease pain and increase appetite in a safe, chemical free way would you consider it? What if that option was marijuana, what many consider to be the root of all evil?

Marijuana is now legal in over 20 states in the U.S. and has been proven very effective for palliative care in humans, as well as treating many other illnesses.

Dr. Doug Kramer of California is a pioneer in the concept of using medical marijuana to treat dogs and cats and has his own clinic Enlightened Veterinary Therapeutics specializing in palliative and hospice care for pets. The marijuana is administered in the form of a tincture. Dr Kramer is not an advocate of feeding your dog “pot brownies” or blowing smoke in their faces. In an article from Vice he says:

To me, it’s animal abuse, really. It kills me because it devalues what I’m trying to do. Especially in the early stages, starting the dialogue with veterinary medicine, the last thing you want is for people to do that. The dog doesn’t need the medication in that situation.”

Would you use medical marijuana to ease suffering for your golden? I consider it a herbal remedy and certainly would. Please vote! No email or obligation required…

Suspected Murder Scene is Water Trail from Golden Retriever

In Almere, Holland, a picture taken by a Google Image helicopter raised concerns that a horrific crime had taken place.

The image looked like a trail of blood leading down a dock. It went viral and eventually the dog’s owner Jacquelina Koenen saw the picture.

Jacquelina, 52, told The Sun: “When I saw the picture I realized, ‘It’s my dog’. He loves the water.”

“He jumps off the end of the jetty, swims round to the bridge and runs down to the edge again. It’s hilarious that everyone thought it was murder. But it’s great he’s now world famous.”

Rama is a 5 year old golden retriever.  The police have apparently confirmed the dog’s innocence!
