A Boy and A Dog

I recently came across this video and thought it was absolutely beautiful.

Then I began to read the comments (why do I do this?) and it became so much more…I personally find no issue with this interaction, but some say the dog is being “dominant” and others say it is being cruel to the boy.  Others turn this into a religous battle.

Everyone’s a critic.  Hope you enjoy!

The Tucker Files: Golden Retriever on a Hike

Tucker had a great summer with many hikes on the local trail, which involved swimming in the river and fetching sticks.  Here are some of the best shots we were able to capture….

Here is a great photo of Tucker loving the river.  He likes to chase sticks, rescue them, bring them to the shore, and chew them to bits…

Sometimes he gets ahead of us, and looks back, “Are you guys coming?”

Tucker and I Took the “Leave-It” Challenge, and Passed!

Does your dog have self-control?  Can you place his or her favorite treat inches away and snap a photo?  What a great challenge!

I came across this blog post from a great blog called It’s All About Dogs while browsing dog blogs today, and it seemed like a great idea!.  I Googled “Leave It Challenge dogs” and came upon this cute blog post from another blog called  Lynne’s Letters of various dogs posing with their favorite food. Can you and your dog pass the “Leave It” Challenge?  Share this post with your other dog friends and see if they can complete “The Leave-It Challenge”.  It’s fun, regardless of the breed!!

Here’s Tucker watching intently while I position the kibble…

And here I am in action, placing the kibble, and telling him what a good boy he is the whole time.  He is only just over a year old, and for a golden retriever, this is extreme self control.  Keep in mind, he also has the photographer flashing photos behind him in the background.

And here he is, challenge complete.  Milliseconds after this, he went for the kibble, (I quickly said “good boy!!!!!)  and I got 90 percent of it, praised the heck out of him some more, and gave him a small piece of cheese!!  Good boy Tucker!!

Elizabeth Warren Loses Beloved Golden Retriever 5 Days Before Election

Elizabeth Warren is a newly-elected United States Senator for the state of Massachusetts, the first female to fill that role.  She is a financial guru, Harvard Law School professor, .and more importantly, a golden retriever lover.  Her beloved golden Otis passed away just 5 days before the election.  Otis helped Elizabeth in her campaign, “Dog Lovers for Elizabeth Warren”

Otis was diagnosed with Canine Lymphoma in the spring, and by Halloween was unable to get up to greet the trick or treaters.  Warren says Otis wasn’t an overly active golden, and would just “stand and pose” after retrieving the ball.

On  November 30, 2012,  Warren posted on her facebook page:

One of the most fun parts of the campaign was sharing our golden retriever Otis with all of you. So I now need to share some sad news: We lost Otis. He was battling cancer, and he suddenly went downhill. Bruce and I are heartbroken, but we are grateful for seven and a half years with our big, handsome boy. He’ll always live in our hearts.”

A very beautiful article  from The Boston Globe about Senator-elect Warren and Otis, written by fellow golden retriever owner Brian McGrory can be found here.

Golden Retrievers Trapped in Thin Ice, Rescued By Firefighters

On Tuesday December 4, 2012, Misty, a old golden retriever, fell through some thin ice on the Mattagami River in Timmins, Ontario.  A 911 call was received by the Timmins Fire Dept at approximately 1pm.  Misty was trapped in the thin ice and open water, whimpering when the ice rescue raft reached her.

Firefighter Gilles Leduc actually tipped over the ice rescue sled while trying to save Misty.

After a bystander dried her off with a fireman’s coat, she was off, running towards some houses.  She was located safe and sound at her home.  Hopefully a lesson was learned here.  Thank you to the firefighters who risk their lives every day, even for our pets. Timmins Firefighters recommend when an animal is in danger, you should call 911 and not attempt to rescue the animal yourself. (and stay away from thin ice!)

Full story with photos from the Timmins Times click here.

According to a comment on the original article Misty has belonged to the Tremblay family for 7 years.  They are thankful to the firefighters that Misty is back safe and sound.

A similar incident occured on November 24, 2012 near Fargo, ND.  Mooreland Firefighters were called to rescue Maggie, the two year old golden retriever who was out for a walk with her owner Debbie Olson when she went after a boy across the river and got trapped in the thin ice and open water.

Debbie says in an article by WDayNews:

she’d been in about 15 minutes and she was starting to cry and stuff and I don’t think she would have made it too much longer. So, thankfully, they came and got her out.

Golden Retriever Joins Cross Country Team!

Here’s a cute little story about a golden retriever named Chloe who helps her owner Sammy Stoner, who suffers from.Stargardt disease, compete with her Lexington High school on the cross country team.

According to an article from Yahoo Sports, here are the deails..

“Stoner suffers from a rare form of macular degeneration known as Stargardt disease, a condition which began to rob her of her sight at age 14. Each year the teenager loses progressively more sight, and she now struggles to see anything at all without visual aids.”

Golden Video of the Week – Golden Retriever Runs A Store

Brodie’s Bucket List – A Golden Retriever’s Last Days…

This one had me sobbing.  Sometimes these things happen, but we need to celebrate the life.  Brodie, you will be remembered….

brodie

This is taken from YouTube Channel Vince DiCecco here.

“Brodie is a 7-year old, female, Hunter Red Golden Retriever who has recently been diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma–an incurable cancer in canines that resides in the blood vessel walls and attacks the major organs. Her prognosis only gives us a few months to enjoy her.

We’ve created a bucket list for Brodie and, over the past three weeks, riding in a fire truck, hiking to the top of Kennesaw Mountain and Brasstown Bald (the highest point in GA), wading in Helton Creek Falls, enjoying a McDonald’s ice cream cone, attending a summer stock performance of Seussical the Musical, visiting the Newtown Dream Dog Park, and walking along the shoreline of and on a floating boat dock on Lake Allatoona have all been crossed off her list. More fun things to follow..”
